Philip Buckland: Översikt

A short introduction to the working life of Philip Buckland, palaeoecologist, environmental archaeologist and research infrastructure developer.

Current responsibilities

Director of The Environmental Archaeology Lab (MAL)
Director of the SEAD Project
Faculty of Arts infrastructure representative
Research, teaching and method development

Research summary

My research interests include palaeoentomology (insects in archaeology and Quaternary science), climate change, environmental change, statistics, GIS and computer applications in archaeology/environmental science, international research infrastructure and database development. Please see the research page for more details, and the publications page for some of the results.

I am currently responsible for the Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD) project, a national and international research infrastructure for data from the application of scientific methods in archaeology. The project is based at the Environmental Archaeology Lab in close collaboration with HUMlab in Umeå, the Laboratory for Ceramic Research and National laboratory for wood anatomy and dendrochronology in Lund, with plans for extending this scope. We are also working with the Swedish National Heritage Board, Swedish county administrative boards and international partners, to integrate palaeoenvironmental and cultural heritage data sources through online interfaces for research and public use. See the project website for more information. The VISEAD project aims to develop the connections of SEAD in more directions as well as increase its general accessibility.

A number of international infrastructure projects are connected to this work, including the Neotoma Palaeoecology Database and community, and the DataArc research infrastructure.

Teaching

I teach courses in the three year Archaeology Bachelor's Degree programme (in Swedish - see website), and two year Environmental Archaeology Master's Degree programme (see website). I also teach occasional course module in the Faculty of Art's and Digital Humanities PhD programmes, and provide supervision on dissertations and theses at all levels.

My main teaching areas are in environmental archaeology (theory, method and practice), palaeoentomology, statistics and presentation techniques, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Previously taught courses, which may sometime make a comeback, have included Forensic Archaeology, Survey and Prospection, and Statistics.

If you are interested in undertaking an undergraduate thesis or undertaking a training component (work placement) of your degree programme at our lab or with SEAD, then please send me an email.
