Environmental Archaeology Laboratory
Welcome to the website of the Environmental Archaeology Laboratory!
Umeå University is situated in the center of Northern Sweden (Lat 64°-Long 22°). Its geographical location and position within the administrative capital of the North makes it an ideal place for scientific research and education. In particular the situation creates a wealth of possibilities for enhancing our understanding of Nordic Archaeology and prehistory throughout Scandinavia and the neighbouring countries.
The laboratory has been operating as a National Resource since 1994, and has built up a solid foundation for the scientific study of environmental archaeology. A wide range of sampling equipment is housed at the lab and the staff are skilled in most types of investigation, from research design, through analyses, to final reporting.
The staff collectively hold a wealth of knowledge relating to research in the sciences and arts which make up archaeology. A variety of research methods are employed, primarily from the natural sciences, and depending on the situations encountered and the questions asked. For details click on Research Methods.
The combinations of these methods, between themselves and with others, allows for the potential of comprehensive pre- and post-excavation environmental analyses.
Multidisciplinary research is often the key to innovative and productive work, and the lab has extensive connections to other institutions and subjects. See our Projects and Links pages for more details. There are also some examples of multidisciplinary research included in our bibliography.
You can find us in corridors C and E on the bottom floor of the Humanities Faculty building, Umeå University campus. Feel free to contact any member of staff for more information!
